Motion to separate KentIRC from Compsoc
Motion put forward by: Michael Barnwell, Oliver Cole and David Bell.
This society notes:
- That KentIRC is an IRC network, comprising of three servers, managed and provided by Compsoc.
- That KentIRC is provided for use by all members of the University of Kent.
- That KentIRC is Compsoc's most popular service.
This society believes:
- That KentIRC causes a significant number of lengthy (and often unresolved) debates, arguments and feuds.
- That too much time is spent by Compsoc officers on the KentIRC service.
- That not enough time is spent by Compsoc officers on events and other services.
- That allowing an executive commitee to make final decisions concerning KentIRC will probably not resolve the afore mentioned arguments, and will not encourage Compsoc to work on other events and services. It will simply raise the voice of some, whilst lowering the importance of others.
This society resolves:
- To create a new separate commitee which is responsible for the KentIRC network.
- To devolve all matters relating to KentIRC from Compsoc to that commitee. This commitee will, until such time that this motion is revoked, be be solely responsible for all decisions, abuse procedures, policies and the adding/removing IRC staff/operators.
- That the commitee shall be governed by the following rules:
- The commitee shall be comprised of four elected members and associate members.
- Each server not provided by Compsoc will be represented by one associate member from the provider.
- The Senior Office of Compsoc shall serve as the associate member representing all Compsoc provided servers.
- Associate members shall carry out all technical work required by the committee on their respective servers where console access is required.
- The commitee shall meet at least once a month or more frequently, at their discretion. Associate members shall not be required to attend these meetings.
- The commitee shall decide upon a representative who shall present a report to Compsoc on the status of KentIRC at each SGM.
- The commitee shall decide upon a chairperson to chair each meeting.
- The commitee shall be required to take minutes and record technical changes.
- The elected members shall be elected at the first Compsoc SGM of the year and shall remain members for one year.
Thoughts:
- change commitee to team?
- Change the SO being an associate to an IRC Officer, or perhaps officers deciding in some other way?
- Have some form of vote of no confidence in commiteee members?
- Four is too small, could be hijacked - needs to be an odd number for internal votes too
