Report on Officer projects
Adam Sampson told us a little about the current projects that the officers are engaged in.
- Game server
- This is proceeding well, the finishing touches have to be put to the networking side, and then its up to the officers to set up some game servers.
- The issue of memory requirements was raised, but it was pointed out that memory requirements are low because no graphics processing is occuring server side.
- Thin client
- Compsoc now has a thin client to compsoc1 sitting in SE105.
- We have parts to build another two thin clients.
- The spec required to run a thin client was also discussed.
- New compsoc1
- The situation of the society bank accounts was briefly mentioned
- The society has approximately £1000 across two bank accounts.
- The situation of the society bank accounts was briefly mentioned
- Website overhaul / wiki
- The website has now been forwarded to the wiki, and old content has been moved.
- Keysigning party
- Adam Sampson will organise a GPG/PGP tutorial and keysigning party at some point in the near future.
Adam Sampson also brought up a few ideas for Officers to do in the future, with details filled in by some others.
- Electronic voting
- The IRC option was discussed
- It was decided to discuss this further on the officers list.
- LAN party
- Michael Barnwell spoke briefly about plans for a Compsoc LAN party
- A few locations and internet connection options were discussed.
- Posters
- A plea was put out for anyone with graphic design skill to help
- An indirect offer of help was made.
- Campaign to spread IRC
- A few marketing ideas were raised, tying in the with the next issue.
- Better SU links
- It was discussed that even though we are not an SU society, this does not preclude us from working with them on projects.
- blogs.compsoc.co.uk
- This possibility was raised, although only Adam Sampson appeared to have any experience running a blogging system.
- Officer Teams
- The concept of having officers in teams, for example the game server team or the compsoc1 team, was raised.
- This would enable officers with high email traffic to get a lot done, and could promote cohesion.
- However, one of the benefits of the officers list is that everyone knows what everyone else is doing, and can offer any help needed.
- Abuse Officer
- The proposal for a dedicated Abuse Officer was made.
- This will be discussed further at a later date.
- Other ideas
- The recreation of a line-of-sight wireless Canterbury network was suggested.
- A social event on the 19th.
Questions to committee members
