Constitutional Ideology

Officers and the Committee

First and above all else I believe that the power should be distributed amongst the many and have historically been against the committees’ very existence. Instead I opt towards the society being controlled by the officers, to all those who are interested in running it. Since the new constitution was ratified I am of the position of not giving the committee any further power or the election or appointment of other specialist officers. I am against the existence of the AbuseOfficer and believe this is one step further towards Compsoc being a traditional committee controlled society similar to what is found in the Student Union.

Student Union

As far as the society Student Union membership is concerned, I am for the topic to be discussed and I have remained impartial until recently. I am very sceptical on the benefits that membership can bring to the society - most of them we are able to implement independently and there are significant drawbacks such as lose of control of our funds (which will be certainly less) and ownership of the equipment.

Gamersoc?

One of my biggest concerns is membership to Compsoc by those whose primary interests are computer gaming. While I have no problem with the inclusion of games and the aspects of the gaming industry into the society I am worried that it may undermine the primary aims of the society and take on a disproportion amount of emphasis and resources. I believe that Article 2 of the Constitution needs to be more definitive on the aims of the society.

Services

I believe that there exists too much emphasis on the services provided such as IRC, External shell access and development servers. While these are exciting and important features that our society has to offer, in my observations many people join Compsoc for the use of these services. This can potentially harm decisions requiring a majority vote from the membership as they are not interested in the other operations. I think this needs to be reworked, but needs serious attention to look at all options and consequences of them. The two obvious ones to me are having a duel-membership level, with the basic one not having a vote (or not counting to the two thirds majority) and having access to services and game events (prehaps a gamer subcommittee) or moving all 2/3 majority decision moving to the officers (although this may result in more people jumping into the officers pool).
