AllenBrooker has been in contact with Janet Carter and we have been granted a slot of time at the CS Intro Session, which will probably be on the Monday of intro week (AllenBrooker is gooing to confirm whether this is during Freshers Week or the week after).
The following is a draft speech AllenBrooker wrote for the intro sessions. Obviously names and meeting details are interchangeable. This was put here as an initial idea of what we might talk about. If you have any suggestions for changes, please discuss them below.
Update: I've recieved an email confirming the date and time from Janet:
- We now know that the intro talk for the new students is at 2pm on the Monday of intro week in GLT2. Would you still like a few minutes near the start of the talk? It would also be good if a few members of compsoc attended the drinks reception at 4pm in the quad to talk to the new students.
Obviously I've replied confirming that we do want the slot. AllenBrooker
Draft Talk
First of all, welcome to Kent University.
I'm Allen and I'm here to tell you a bit about the University of Kent Computing Society, or Compsoc.
Compsoc is a great friendly society that, as you might have guessed, is for people interested in computers. As well as providing a way to meet other like minded people, we do a range of different things. Probably most notably, we run an online chat server. You can find out more information about this on our website at compsoc.co.uk
Additionally, we run several linux servers, which we use for a few different purposes. To our members we provide an account on these servers which includes disk space and access to the facilities installed. As well as for member accounts, compsoc runs several game servers. Last year we were running Unreal Tournament and Quake, but it may not necessarily be the same this year.
This year we're going to be running some gaming competitions for those of you who are on the campus network - if you haven't discovered already, you basically can't play games over the Internet from your campus connection. We also have several long term projects in planning, including a LAN gaming event.
We'd like to invite you to a couple of meetings we're holding in the coming weeks. On Thursday we're holding a social meet starting at 7pm in Origins in Darwin and we'll be moving on later to Rutherfood Bar - everyone is welcome. We're also holding our first SGM, where you can come and sign up as a member on <date> in COLT2 (next to the Computing Administration Office at the entrance to the Octagon).
Discussion
Discuss your suggestions here:
- Collect email addresses / hand out flyers
Personally I think you're have too much emphesis on the gaming. Sure, mention it but leave it towards the end. Include some information on our plans for other computer-related activities. (~AlexAdranghi)
